Lead Cinematic Artist

The above is a sample of a scene that I was heavily involved with from the story conception all the way to implementation. I had a hand in brushing up the dialogue to have the maximum impact without the scene coming across as too long and ensuring it felt raw and authentic, planned out the staging and the performance capture, and was in charge of drawing the storyboards and ensuring the quality of the final layout as well.

Responsibilities

Narrative

  • Brainstorming concepts and how to improve story beats.
  • Ensuring story logic remains sound.
  • Polishing English dialogue and assisting in Japanese↔English localization.
  • Improving scene flow in story workshops.
  • Attending VO sessions to ensure pickups match scene requirements and tone.

Cinematic Planning

  • Creating flow diagrams and mapping out staging for cinematics.
  • Drawing storyboards.
  • Creating previz.
  • Communicating with other disciples to align scene requirements and limitations.
  • Making orders for necessary characters, props, environments from the respective teams.

Performance Capture

  • Preparations for performance capture.
    • Creating thorough visual reference materials.
    • Preparing character and environment assets for shoots.
    • Running scene briefing sessions for the PCAP director on site.
  • In charge of direction and on-site support at shoots.
  • Overseeing motion capture data deliveries.
  • Acting for additional mocap required in scenes and gameplay.

Cinematic Edits

  • Creating layouts.
    • Assembling scenes.
    • Animating cinematic cameras.
  • Giving feedback on outsourced layouts.
  • Improving layout flow by overseeing that cuts are appropriately timed to feel natural in English.

Cinematic Implementation

  • Implementation of the cinematic assets into the proprietary game engine.
  • Cinematic related scripting using Luminous Productions’ in-house tools.
  • Creating seamless transitions from gameplay into cinematic and vice versa.

General

  • Japanese↔English interpretation during meetings with overseas partners.
  • English quality checks for internal and external publications.
